Why language matters

A common theme in my posts is my sensitivity (some would say over-sensitivity) to the language used by both “sides” in the battle over what an abortionist does to a human being. (see https://jptryan.wordpress.com/2014/02/16/language-that-betrays/).

It seems the language of those of us on the front lines runs afoul of professional standards for reporting such happenings. In that world, abortionists are instead called “abortion providers”; the places where abortionists dismember, decapitate, crush, poison and otherwise kill innocent human beings are called “clinics” (not mills). And the brutal attack I just described is a “procedure” which is “provided” (not committed).

While writing this I got a tweet from an unknown twitter friend sharing her frustration that so many who know better have their heads buried in the sand. That hit a nerve. And then it came to me. There is still hope. They haven’t buried their ears, otherwise they wouldn’t be complaining about the language we use.

I cut my pro-life teeth on Dr. William Brennan’s research on the essential role of language in such injustices. Research which led to books such as “Exposing the language of the Culture of death”.

But it really only confirmed what I learned as a child.

Then I was sensitized to language by listening to some of my peers and the derogatory language they used about human beings who happen to not share their skin pigment. And watching the evil of racial injustice play itself out on the evening news.

I was horrified by what I saw.

And heard.

As a family we had many dinner table discussions about such evils in the world. It became apparent to me that my peers needed such dehumanizing language so they could continue to discriminate.

Sages such as Burke, St.Thomas Moore, and even our family friend Dr. Brennan simply reinforced what I learned from listening to my peers.

The bottom line is that as much as it offends me to hear abortionists and their apologists manipulate language to disguise and even justify what they do to human beings; I cringe,

literally cringe,

when I hear people I respect using the words of abortionists.

In speech. In print. On Facebook. In conversation.

“Pro-choice”(sic)

“Clinic”.

“Perform”.

“Provider”

“Procedure”

There’s a reason bigots like those peers of mine as I grew up and in today’s world the abortionists cling to their language  manipulations. But those who know better, whom themselves are undoubtedly pro-life using the same words? It’s mind numbing.

Today I am most sensitized to such language by being on the front lines of the abortion holocaust.

I met Cassandra and her “ex” Stephen at Planned Barrenhood this morning. I’ve met many Cassandras and Stephens in the past 34 years at abortion mills.

if you aren’t already sensitized to language, you will be once you speak with the horror of abortion face to face.

Not as an issue.

Nor an opinion.

Not a debate.

The stark reality of near death conversations.

It changes you to stand in the breach seeking to rescue human beings whose scheduled executions are only moments away.

I’ve held in my hands the appointment slip of an abortion bound mom. I can’t begin to explain how chilling it was to look at that slip and know that I was looking at the execution date of an innocent human being. Sadly, in spite of our best efforts that child did die a most brutal death. Those kind of experiences tend to reform a person.

As will holding in your hand the perfectly formed arm of a 12  week old human being which had been ripped from her chest wall by an abortionist only hours earlier. That was over three decades ago, but I remember it like it was yesterday. Experiences like that tend to change the way one views, as well as talks about what an abortionist does to a human being.

So Cassandra, who was “showing”, had to wait until Planned Barrenhood could get its circuit riding abortionist Crist in town.

Crist is an aging modern-day “gunslinger”, who hires his knife out to the highest bidder.

You see Crist specializes in killing the older children. He ruthlessly dismembers them limb by limb, only to have a nurse reassemble the parts to make sure no body parts are left behind.

Are you as sick as I am reading this?

And yet how else to describe it?

What professional standards apply? Do we really do justice to call this bloodletting,  “a procedure?”

When simply describing what an abortionist does to a human  being  is too hard to stomach, how can we call such a perpetrator a “provider”?

“Provider…pro-choice(sic)…clinic…perform…procedure”: if these are the options professional standards leave us with, then it’s well past time that we change those standards. After all the standards should reflect reality, instead of forcing reality to fit the standards.

Cassandra looked to be 20 years old.  She sprang from the car, smiled and patted her protruding belly when I asked her the due date.  She scooted inside to have her child killed while Steven so identified himself as he came to the fence to talk.

Stephen volunteered, “I know I’m participating in a killing”, admitted as the driver he was directly implicated in that killing, and stated he was “totally against this, I hope God will forgive me”. He said “she’s done this before” and noted he wasn’t the father. We talked just inches apart. My heart was pounding. Mind racing. An innocent human being’s life hung in the balance.  I pointed out the Thrive van across the street and begged him to go inside, tell the abortionist he wasn’t willing to drive and see if he could get Cassandra to come out. He finally agreed to go in. I ran to the prayer warriors and asked them to pray for Steven’s success and for Cassandra and her child. They did not come out.

A few minutes later there was a mother who confirmed her daughter was “a few months pregnant” and asked with a tear-stained face “What do they do with the bodies?”.  I explained. I also had a life-sized model of a 12 week old unborn child, the age of her grandchild. Her young son also seemed distraught, and agreed that it was his niece or nephew who was in danger of being killed. He extended his hand and I gave him a model as well and encouraged him to be “a good uncle”. He joined his family as they went inside.  They also did not return.

It seems it was grandparents’ day at the mill as yet another mother pulled up with her daughter in tow. Her daughtre wore the familiar “loose-fitting clothing”. But this grandmother did not respond to my pleas, instead hurrying inside with her daughter to have her grandchild killed.

A family secret of unimaginable horror in the making.

And that’s just 15 minutes on the front lines.

It is emotionally, spiritually and psychologically exhausting.

No words can do justice to the abject horror we encounter at abortion mills nor what abortionists do to human beings. The callous disregard for human life we encounter there. The death, despair and raw evil that permeates that terrible place.

But some words can and do betray that horror.  And the victims of that injustice.

Those would be the words of the abortionists coming out of the mouths and media of those who oppose what an abortionist does to a human being.

We have to end this madness.

Holocaust deniers

It is remarkable that generations after the horror of the Nazi holocaust there are still deniers. Those who would claim that holocaust never occurred. We shake our heads in disbelief.

But those deniers have nothing on the abortion holocaust deniers.

After all, one denies what they cannot see but the other denies what they will not see.

I had “friends” who posted on Facebook that pictures of what an abortionist does to a human being are “trick photography”.

Exactly what do they think an abortionists’ currette, vacuum suction machine, and/or deadly chemicals do to a human being?

I remember a time when looking at an ultrasound picture was something akin to cloud watching.

But now baby’s first picture is a 4d ultrasound that leaves nothing to the imagination.

It is speaks volumes about just  how far we’ve stooped to think that every year over a million baby’s first pictures are now taken by those who would dismember, decapitate, poison and otherwise kill them. Portraits left in the trash, instead of proudly displayed on the mantle.

In less barbaric times parents went to Sears Portrait Studios for baby’s first picture.

Remember the motto of the so-called women’s liberation movement: “You’ve come a long way baby”? Amazing, without even realizing it, they managed to include the human being over whose body that “liberation” was to occur.

Of course only an oppressor would claim such a bloodbath as liberation.

But there’s another group of deniers.

Perhaps the most hideous of all.

Those who deny with our behavior.

The pastors who, week after week, fail to include these innocent human beings in the prayers of the faithful. Really? Not even a prayer? Surely there’s not a holocaust going on.

The faithful who, in over 41 years, have never even made it to the front lines. By doing so we manage to convince one another that there can’t really be a holocaust going on. And we wonder what the Christian church was doing during the Nazi holocaust?

The empty sidewalks that fuel the denial of arriving parents, grandparents as well as neighbors and passersby. After all, there can’t possibly be anything wrong going on there if the place looks like a dentist office. Much less a holocaust.

If we are not denies, then we should act like it.

James says “faith without works is dead” (James 2:26).

He didn’t say wounded.

Insufficient.

Impaired.

He said Dead.

D….E….A….D.

Dead.

No wonder James is not the favorite of many Christians.

But the only difference between James words in this respect and Jesus’ is that Jesus elaborates.

Have you read the Sermon on the Mount lately?

The Gospel calls us to live in a certain way.

And warns us that to not live that way leads to…..death.

In the case of the abortion holocaust that death is not only our own spiritual death but the deaths of innocent human beings victimized by abortionists and the holocaust deniers.

So if you’re not a holocaust denier, start acting like it.

We have to end this madness.

On Poverty

It is a Real Poverty…..

It is the feast of the Holy Innocents.

Remembering the children who were ruthlessly killed in Herod’s effort to continue living as he had been.

Threatened by the presence of a little Child.

An unwanted child (by Herod anyway) who brought THE inconvenient Truth to a world seeped in sin. The Truth of forgiveness, redemption, and true Peace on earth.

A Truth that  Herod knew would not allow him to continue living as he had been.

Herod’s final solution was effected with swords: cutting, dismembering and otherwise killing innocent children.

As I begin this post it is less hand an hour before I will again be on the sidewalk of the only remaining freestanding abortion mill in Missouri: Planned Barrenhood.

I will finish this post after that experience. But I go into it knowing that I will be there among today’s holy innocents whose lives also hang in the balance.

A False Peace 2012

There’s a price to pay to end injustices the magnitude of what abortionists do to human beings. Are we willing to pay the price?

jptryan's avatarMy Brothers Keeper

I did a little research on the origin of the national holiday we call Thanksgiving. Of course we’re all familiar with the story of the first Thanksgiving with the Pilgrims and the Indians. Shame on me but I long ago forgot that this celebration only became a national holiday when Abraham Lincoln proclaimed it as such during the Civil War.

Interestingly enough, he took time out from preparing the Gettysburg Address to issue that Proclamation.

The country was awash in the blood of countless Americans from that terrible conflict. My own Missouri was said to be a “neutral” state then. Odd to think one could be “neutral” about such a clear-cut issue as the horror of slavery. And yet we were. I guess you could say we “were personally opposed, but….”

At first blush it may seem trivial to compare our bloodiest conflict (over 600,000 Americans were killed) to our…

The Abortion Censors

Ireland is fighting to hold back the juggernaut of abortionists preying upon its children. As always the abortionists seek to censor those who would stand in their way. Stand strong pro-life Ireland.

jptryan's avatarMy Brothers Keeper

At the abortion mill we offer moms and dads (and grandparents for that matter) information on help that’s available as well as facts on abortion.

The “Deathscorts” routinely take that literature away from the parents who accept it from us. All this  while wearing bibs that celebrates “choice”.

Really?

Now how can a mom truly make an informed choice if she doesn’t have all the information?

In fact if the “pro-choice” advocates really support “choice” shouldn’t they be the ones handing out information on all the resources available to moms?

For that matter if they really wanted to make sure moms are able to make an “informed choice” why aren’t they the ones showing the graphic pictures of what an abortionist does to an unborn child?

After all that’s the “choice” called abortion. It’s done to the child.

It is the child the abortionist dismembers, poisons and/or otherwise kills.

The abortionist doesn’t do an ultrasound…

Doing The Work of the Secret Service

Few have read this tribute to Gianna Jessen, survivor of an abortionist’s attempt to kill her. Gianna is the “Silent Scream” who is silent no longer.

jptryan's avatarMy Brothers Keeper

A couple of recent experiences on the front lines of the abortion battle brought to mind Robert Fulghum’s book of short stories  “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten” with the minor modification:  “All I Really Need to Know, I Learned From My 6th Grade PSR Class …. and Chris”.

My 6th Grade PSR Class viewed abortion survivor Gianna Jessen’s youtube video.

Then they answered the question “what do you think the Gianna’s of today would want you to do in response to abortion?”

Interestingly enough they did not recommend the response largely taken by my generation when abortion was “legalized” in 1973: education, lobbying, letter writing. No. Almost instinctively they took the perspective of the child: “We need to be there and stop it!”

You see, my class takes abortion personally.   They “get” the reality that like Gianna they are all survivors of this evil. Made…

Have We Had Enough?

Have you had enough of the violence of abortionists? If so, read and forward. If not, take a good look at what an abortionist does to a human being.

jptryan's avatarMy Brothers Keeper

Friday night, as I was preparing for the next day at the only remaining freestanding abortion mill in Missouri,  my Facebook page included a post by a fellow pro-lifer who used the term “pro-choice” in identifying those who support what an abortionist does to a human being .

Disheartening to say the least.

When one of our own uses the rhetoric that sustains the apartheid of abortionists.

Rhetoric that has brought us 41 years of the abortion holocaust.

It’s part of the manipulation of language that is necessary for such an atrocity to occur.

And using the language of the oppressors dishonors the oppressed.

Perpetuates the injustice.

The language of the Klan.

The Brownshirts.

The Gulag.

How are we ever going to end the nightmare of the abortion holocaust if those of us who know better, who ostensibly oppose this bloodbath, use the language of the perpetrators?

We’ve all seen…

Paying the Price for “Choice”

A debate is coming at Purdue questioning whether what abortionists do to human beings is a “Human Rights Injustice.” The professor who pro-proposes to support this barbaric act actually proves my point from this old blog by using the canard of “choice” as his defense. Please read and most importantly pass this on. We need to end this madness ! https://jptryan.wordpress.com/2014/01/24/paying-the-price-for-choice/

jptryan's avatarMy Brothers Keeper

On Wednesday, January 22, 2014, the 41st anniversary of the infamous Roe and Doe decisions, I stood on the doorstep of President Obama’s neighborhood abortion mill (Downtown DC Planned Barrenhood) and reflected on the shallowness of the pro-aborts rhetoric.

And the sheepishness of those of us who would claim to oppose what abortionists do to unborn children.

41 years later the abortionists still have the same old tired shallow rhetoric.

“Pro-Choice.”

Really?

That’s it.

I kid you not.

College professors who pride themselves on their intellectual depth: same tired rhetoric.

U.S. Senators? You got it.

How about the leader of the free world? Same, same.

And with that, abortionists and their apologists have been given a free pass to kill almost 57 MILLION human beings.

So I asked the Deathscorts there, whose rhetoric is so old even the words “pro-choice” on their vests is faded, “What choice does your abortionist…

Language that Betrays

Recently there have been several articles in pro-life publications about abortionists’  Guttmacher’s latest statistical breakdown of the abortion holocaust, indicating a decline in the national abortion rate.

One such publication began its editorial about report with the stunning statement: “It was news that made pro-lifers rejoice.”

Of course we all rejoice when any human being is rescued from the deadly intent of an abortoinist.

But rejoice at the national abortion rate? Which continues, according to that same report, to result in the brutal deaths of 21% of human beings conceived today?  Amid a continuing bloodbath that has taken the lives of  57 million innocent human beings and counting?Hardly.

And add to that the untold numbers of human beings killed by the abortifacient “backup” mechanism of contraception:  whose plight the abortionists who wrote this report did not even acknowledge, and clearly we remain in the midst of a holocaust of unequaled  proportions.

How is it possible some are said to rejoice?

I think the answer lies deeper, in the language of the editorial. Abortionists are referred to as “providers”.  Attacking a human being in the womb with RU 486, Plan B, Ella, and/or the IUD is described as “providing (a) service.”  The editorial states that abortions are “perform(ed).” And describes what an abortionists does to a human being as “a procedure“.

To quote Gianna Jessen (survivor of an abortionist’s attempt on her life  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOWMmx6eBjU#t=497  ): “Awww! The horror that fills my life!”

Imagine telling Gianna that the abortionist who utilized chemical warfare in an attempt  to kill her was “providing a service.”

Those who should know better using the language of the oppressors!

But anyone who read this editorial and did not catch the horror of the language used likely have plenty of company.

But that company, praise God, does not include my 6th grade PSR class.

I did an exercise with them.

It began with no mention of abortion or the editorial. Each student listed words they associated with Service, Perform, and Providers.

They came up with thirty-two different word associations. Not surprisingly, not one listed abortions or abortionists.

Next one student read the editorial out loud as the class listened for the three words from our exercise.

They found them.

And voiced disdain that such words were used to describe abortionists and what they do to human beings. They get the fact that such language desensitizes us to the brutal reality of what abortionists do.

For they are survivors of the abortion holocaust.

When asked for more accurate descriptors they agreed that an abortion is committed not “performed.” That it is committed by abortionists not “providers”. And that chemical warfare in the womb is not “a service.” They described what abortionists do as “killing and murder.” And began to brainstorm as to what they could do to stop it.

We could all learn a lot from my PSR class. As survivors of this holocaust they have a voice like no others.

The very least we owe those threatened by abortionists is to not dehumanize and/or sanitize the horror of the abortion holocaust with either our language or our actions. Doing so only serves to further betray the victims of abortionists. It distances us from our responsibility to do something about it.

So we own them one more thing.

To show up.

To rescue those being dragged to the slaughter.

And there’s one other advantage to such an appropriate response: if you join us on the front lines, assume the perspective of the Gianna Jessens of today,  it will never, ever, ever even occur to you to use the language of the culture of death in describing what an abortionist does to a human being.

I say 41 years is…..

Enough!

What say you?

A Thousand Words

What do you see in this picture?

What did the driver of the yellow van in the picture “see” as he drove by?

https://scontent-a-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc3/t1/1779151_10202371488320715_650320097_n.jpg

A friend sent this picture with the commentary:

“This was today (2/11/14) in Charlotte outside an abortion “clinic”. The sewer was clogged with (the body parts of) dead babies and these poor souls had the horrible job of having to clean it out. The lady (who) took this picture put this quote above it:Please share this! The (remains) that doesn’t clog (go) to the water treatment plant. SICK! The guy in the blue was crying, and said it is horrible that people do this. This needs to stop. The other guy was crying and refusing to participate!” If this doesn’t make your blood boil, you’re ice cold. DEAD. BABIES!!!! (Dumped) in the sewer like garbage. (Human beings)!!!! This is what America has come to! This is beyond sick. This is a modern day Holocaust!!! Innocent human beings!!! God forgive.us!
And yes, I can personally vouch that this is true. This isn’t the first nor the last time (bodies)  are disposed of this way. Gosnell (did this) and others do… too.”

Read this story and tell me that I’m obsessed with what an abortionist does to a human being.

Body parts clogging the sewer!

Are you kidding me?!

And most of us go about our lives as if nothing is happening.

Check out the yellow van in the picture. they just drove by the scene- oblivious to the horror about them.

But are they any different from the majority of us who have yet to make it to the mills, or do a “fly by” once a year?

In fact the only people who are in this picture are the plumbers.

Where is the rest of the Church in Charlotte?

Or other people of good will?

Still think we shouldn’t show the world what an abortionist does to a human being?

Not disturb the people in the yellow van?

How much longer will we allow what happened to those human beings in this sewer to continue?

Obsessed?

Really?

We have to end this madness!

Now.

Had enough?
